Layering washes and prints on to a variety of papers is often where I start to work through ideas, and useful in a block, as I can begin very simply and let a surface develop. Large amounts of these papers are filtered out and a few are pursued on to cloth and stitch. I largely work with calico and cottons, dyeing batches of cloth at the start of a project before printing and mark making begin.
